Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs). The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.
From 1 April 2019, the charges are:
If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months, or more than 14 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC. The charge for a single prescription item is £9.00, whereas a three month PPC will cost you £29.10 and a 12 month PPC £104.00.

Your regular medication as agreed between you and your doctor is available again by using the repeat slip of your last computer generated prescription.
Please allow two working days for us to process your repeat prescription request here at the practice. We can then send your prescription to the chemist of your choice - or you can collect it from the Surgery. Please make it very clear if you are changing from your usual chemist to a new one - to avoid mistakes.
Please allow up to a further 2 days for the chemist to dispense your medication ready for collection.
We participate in the Electronic Prescription Service. This means your prescription can be sent directly to the pharmacy of your choice for collection. No paper prescription is generated thus saving paper and avoiding the danger of lost prescriptions. Please ask at reception for details.
You can obtain your repeat prescription in three ways:
If you no longer have the repeat slip from your last prescription please write down your details and the medication you require and pass this into the surgery.
PLEASE NOTE : We do not take telephone requests for repeat prescriptions as there is a danger of mistakes being made by telephone.
Please do not stock pile medication, this can be dangerous and wasteful!
Please allow 48 hours, excluding weekends and Bank Holidays, for your request to be processed. Any problems please telephone the surgery.

The Medical Centre is committed to working to best practice guidelines on prescribing to ensure that patients receive safe and effective treatment that makes best use of NHS resources.
Repeat prescriptions are normally only issued at 28 day intervals to reduce wastage of medicines. If a repeat prescription is requested early it will not be dealt with until it becomes due. In exceptional circumstance prescriptions can be issued to cover a longer period, for example to cover a holiday abroad.
Some medication may be prescribed for much shorter periods.
GPs review patient’s medication at least annually.
When national or local prescribing guidance changes, the GPs will review patients medication accordingly to ensure we are conforming to best practice. You may see drug names and doses change. If you are concerned about any changes please do give us a ring and we will explain the reasons behind the change.
Please do not order more medication than you need as this can lead to more waste. The cost of wasted medication remains a significant drain on NHS resources.
NHS England published new prescribing guidance (29 March 2018) which covers 35 minor, short-term health conditions, which are either ‘self-limiting’ or suitable for ‘self-care’.Self-care can be described as:
• a self-limiting condition does not require any medical advice or treatment as it will clear up on its own, such as sore throats, coughs, colds and viruses• a minor illness that is suitable for self-care can be treated with items that can be purchased over the counter from a pharmacy. These conditions include, for example, indigestion, mouth ulcers and warts and verrucae.
Check your medicine cabinet and make sure you have the following basics to hand when you need them. Any out-of-date medicines should be returned to your pharmacy.
• Painkillers (tablets and liquids), such as paracetamol or ibuprofen • Antihistamines for allergies • Rub-on painkilling gel • Oral rehydration sachets • Indigestion remedies • Laxatives • Anti-diarrhoea medicine • Cream or spray to treat insect bites, stings, cuts and grazes • Plasters and dressings

We encourage patients to self-care, when treatments are available to purchase over the counter (OTC) and/or considered to be medicines of limited clinical value. The practice will not routinely prescribe items to treat these conditions unless it is deemed to be appropriate by the prescriber.
